Our crew did talk with someone at National a couple of years ago regarding changing and adding [Venturing advancement] requirements. He said it is fine. In fact, we were encouraged to create and adapt new requirements and send them to National for reference (not approval). The jist of the conversation was that there was no way that they (National) could cover every or all interests on crew members and that we needed to take initiative, keeping consistent with the tone and caliber of what already existed. The aim of the program was not to limit interests or activities, but to encourage creativity and expansion.

In our case, The Winter Sports requirements for the Ranger Award did not include snowshoeing or dog sledding. We were encouraged to write our own requirements for both based on the existing requirements for the other sports in the category. Our dog sledders also get an additional crew award called the Order of the Husky. It is a small pewter husky charm suspended from a ribbon the color of a bruise--a very coveted award in that you have to have at least one bruise in the color of the ribbon.

The person at National emphasized the difference between Venturing and Boy Scouts where everything is spelled out--no more, no less. We need to be more inclusive and recognize where the interests of our members already are and recognize them at the level where they are.

The most difficult individuals for advancement to Silver in our crew are guys who already have Eagles. In the area of setting personal goals, their response is usually, "Just tell me what I need to do." We tell them it is not that simple and that each individual will have different goals depending on who they are and where they are. One individual may start at Point A and be expected to set a Goal at B. However, if the individual is already at B, then they need to ramp up to C. We need to evaluate our members as individuals, each with unique talents and capabilities.
